A Simple, Solid Beginner Metal Detector

Bounty Hunter Gold Digger Metal Detector

The Gold Digger is a simple machine. It is powered by 2 9-volt alkaline batteries that are NOT INCLUDED with the device.

As for the operation, the needle moves on the Sensitivity Meter display (see picture below) and sound is produced through the speakers when it detects metal. As mentioned, there are two knobs on the control housing. One is a “Power Level” knob, and the other is a “Trash Eliminator” knob for discrimination.

The product manual recommends that you play with these settings and conduct experiments before proceeding to put the device to use. The Trash Eliminator has an OFF setting when the knob is turned all the way counter-clockwise. A slight turn clockwise will click the Trash Eliminator ON, and from there you can adjust the degree to which you would like the discrimination to take effect. Once again, the manual suggests it will take practice and some experimentation before you can become skilled at distinguishing between trash and valuable items.
Bounty Hunter Gold Digger Metal Detector GripThere is an internal speaker on the control housing, but it is recommended that you use the INCLUDED headphones to save battery life as well as give you the ability to detect faint noises you may not hear from the speakers.

It is waterproof up to the control housing where the electronics are stored, so you can use it in shallow water.

Things to Watch Out For

Bounty Hunter Gold Digger Metal Detector BottomSomething that you should probably expect with a model this inexpensive is the durability may not exactly be stellar. One user commented that the control housing was made out of cheap plastic, and is not built to withstand a lot of banging around. It is a lightweight model and is not advertised as anything but. Bottom line, know going in that you’re not purchasing a heavy piece of artillery.

You’ve also got to have realistic expectations for this device. It will help you find metal, but it just isn’t a complex machine that can tell you what you’re detecting. Not too many bells and whistles. As I’ve thoroughly repeated through this review, it’s a simple machine that’s affordable, so if you know this going in, you probably won’t be disappointed.

Summary

At the time of this writing, there are currently 309 user reviews on Amazon.com with an average rating of 4.3 out of 5. With a price under $70, you can’t really beat what you get with the Gold Digger, especially if it’s your first one. If you’re looking to get involved in metal detecting hardcore and want something a little more sophisticated and advanced, by all means check out a more expensive model. But if you’re just looking to do some occasional treasure hunting strictly for fun, the Gold Digger would be a good choice.

What Consumers are Saying

One of the first things customers say about the Gold Digger is how easy it is to assemble. An overwhelming comment is how great it is for beginners. Many customers give accounts of the product arriving, and they go outside and immediately find objects in their yards. One woman claimed that she was able to find a ring that she had recently lost.

Another consistent message from user reviews is that it is a great gift for kids. One reviewer commented that her 11-year-old son was able to assemble the product with no problem. The comments are mixed about whether it is short enough for children. It probably depends on how tall your children are. If they are under 10 or are relatively short children, you may want to opt for a more junior detector.

There is also advice given to test the device out before doing any serious detecting. Also to experiment with the Trash Eliminator knob settings so you can learn how it behaves with different materials.
